Generic drugs available for the treatment of osteoporosis

February 28, 2014

[

Our research shows that some of our members are not taking their prescribed brand drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis because they are too costly. For this reason, we?d like to remind you that the following generic alternatives are available for the treatment of osteoporosis:

  • alendronate
  • ibandronate
  • etidronate
  • zoledronic acid

In addition to the above-mentioned drugs, the zoledronic acid injection is also available. Please keep in mind that for our Medicare Advantage HMO members, injectable drugs generally are covered under the pharmacy benefit (i.e., Part D) when given in the home or in a long-term care setting.

We encourage you to prescribe these generic drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis, when appropriate. These lower-cost alternatives may help improve member adherence to prescribed medications.
