Expansion of telemedicine coverage

To encourage social distancing and increase access to care, AmeriHealth New Jersey continues to expand its telemedicine services to our members. This chart provides details of the expanded coverage.

  Fully insured groups Self-funded groups
Coverage timeline

Effective March 6, 2020, until 90 days after the end of both the state of emergency and the public health emergency related to COVID-19.

Effective March 6, 2020, until December 31, 2021​.

Primary care provider (PCP) visits
  • Cost-sharing (i.e., copayment, deductible, and coinsurance) is waived for all telemedicine visits with in-network PCPs.

  • ​Groups can choose to waive cost-sharing for all non-COVID-19 related telemedicine with in-network PCPs.​

Specialist visits
  • Cost-sharing is waived for telemedicine appointments with in-network specialists; nutrition counseling; urgent care; video-only visits for physical and occupational therapy; and audio or video for speech therapy.

  • Groups can choose to waive cost-sharing for all non-COVID-19 related telemedicine visits with in-network specialists; nutrition counseling; urgent care; video-only visits for physical and occupational therapy; and audio or video for speech therapy for in-network services.  Out-of-network services are only covered if the benefit design allows or is permitted by AmeriHealth New Jersey due to a network adequacy or access limitation.

Behavioral health visits
  • No cost-share for in-network tele-behavioral health visits.​

  • Groups can choose to waive cost-sharing for all non-COVID-19 related in-network tele-behavioral health visits.

MDLive® visits
  • Cost-sharing is waived for all MDLive telemedicine visits.

  • Groups can choose to waive cost-sharing for all non-COVID-19 related MDLive telemedicine visits.


It is federally mandated that visits related to COVID-19 testing and diagnosis are covered without member cost-sharing.
