Free implicit bias training (with credits) available for maternal health workers

February 14, 2023

Did you know that Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related causes than White women?

Recent reports on racial and ethnic disparities in maternal health show that severe maternal morbidity rates are consistently higher among Black, Latina, and Asian women compared to White women, regardless of age or type of insurance.

As one way to address this inequity in maternal health outcomes, AmeriHealth HMO, Inc. and AmeriHealth Insurance Company of New Jersey have partnered with the March of Dimes to offer implicit bias training to maternal health workers in our networks.

All maternal care providers — clinicians and administrative staff alike — can register for Awareness to Action: Dismantling Bias in Maternal and Infant Healthcare. This 90-minute e-learning course provides several key benefits:

  • It's free (limit 200 attendees).
  • Physicians can earn 1.5 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits.
  • Nurses can earn 1.5 American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) contact hours.
  • It's virtual (participants can save while in progress and return to complete).
  • It's available for six months, through August 1, 2023.

As a participant, you will hear true stories from mothers who have navigated the health care system and experienced discrimination and bias in care. You will learn about structural racism and how it can impact health care interactions. You will also receive tools to help you mitigate racial bias in maternity care and build a culture of equity within your organization.

There are only 200 seats available for this free training. To register, click here to create an account. To access the training, complete all fields in your account profile, enter ACT247 into ORG ID, and click Save.

Why are we offering this?

We know that demographic factors (e.g., race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, and gender identity) can influence how people experience the health care system, as well as the health outcomes they achieve. We have partnered with March of Dimes, the leading organization fighting for the health of all moms and babies, to support our efforts to promote equity in maternal care settings.

We are committed to addressing the root causes of health inequity and creating healthier outcomes for every person in every community we serve.
