October 29, 2021

This article was revised on October 29, 2021, to update the effective timeline.

Independence’s definition of “direct supervision” of a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) has been modified to include direct supervision by a physician’s virtual presence. Virtual presence includes audio/video real-time communications technology when used to reduce exposure risks for the member or health care provider.

The change is effective:

  • Commercial members: March 6, 2020, through December 31, 2021, and is subject to re-evaluation during the public health emergency;
  • Medicare Advantage members: March 6, 2020, and for the duration of the public health emergency.

Independence is committed to providing our members with access to the care they need during the COVID-19 pandemic. We encourage all Independence members and providers to visit our dedicated COVID-19 webpage regularly for the latest news and updates. We will continue to evaluate member needs as the situation changes.
