Important information regarding Retiree 65 Plus Medicare Supplement plan

Independence Blue Cross (IBX) offers Retiree 65 Plus to several self-funded employer groups in the Philadelphia area.* It is a Medicare Supplement plan (not a Medicare Advantage PPO plan) and pays secondary to Original Medicare.

Important billing information for Retiree 65 Plus members

Providers should submit claims for these members to Original Medicare, the primary payer. IBX is the secondary payor.

After the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) adjudicates the claim, IBX enforces a 30-day window from the Medicare remittance date (i.e., the date the claim was finalized by CMS). This window does the following:

  • Allows CMS sufficient time to crossover the claim to IBX and for IBX to complete secondary adjudication.
  • Prevents duplicate claims and ensures correct pricing.

If the secondary payment is NOT received within 30 days, providers should submit the claim, along with the Medicare Explanation of Benefits and header liability information, directly to IBX for payment of remaining member cost-sharing, based on the Retiree 65 Plus benefit.

What is Retiree 65 Plus?

Retiree 65 Plus reduces out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare for retirees enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. These out-of-pocket expenses include deductibles, copayments, and other costs that may arise when retirees need medical care, and some services not covered by Original Medicare.

Any provider who accepts Original Medicare can provide service to a Retiree 65 Plus member.

Members are instructed to present both their Medicare card and the Retiree 65 Plus member ID card when receiving care.
