Ways that Independence is helping to support positive maternal health outcomes

Going through pregnancy and postpartum is exciting, but it can also be challenging at times. Fortunately, your patients don't have to go through it alone. Independence Blue Cross (Independence) offers programs and resources that can help expectant and new mothers through every stage of their parenthood journey – including family planning, fertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and more.

Learn more about all the ways Independence can support you and your patients (our members) in achieving better maternal health outcomes.

Reducing racial disparities in maternal health

Independence is committed to reducing racial disparities in maternal health outcomes. We have partnered with Cayaba Care and Cocolife.black to help support members at increased risk for complications before, during, and after pregnancy.

  • Cayaba Care

Independence is collaborating with Cayaba Care, an independent maternity program providing convenient and customized support for Black and Brown communities and high-risk individuals throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey. Cayaba Care provides a complete set of maternity services — including pregnancy, birth planning, postpartum, as well as lactation, doula, nutrition, and mental health support — coordinated by a dedicated Maternity Navigator and care team. Its services are delivered via its hybrid at-home, in-clinic, virtual, and text model, designed with your patients' needs in mind.

Your fully-insured patients who have Independence commercial health plans, and who are pregnant or recently pregnant, may be eligible for Cayaba Care's services. Maternal health physicians can enroll patients by contacting Cayaba Care directly at 267-668-2811.

  • Cocolife.black

Independence works with Cocolife.black to help support Black and Brown birthing people during pregnancy, the postpartum period, and after the loss of a child or significant loved one. They provide easy access to education and community resources such as free diapers, formula, and childcare services.

Cocolife.black also offers access to mental health services. Members should check their benefits regarding coverage for mental health services.

Implicit Bias raining for maternal health providers and staff

Independence invites all maternal health workers in its network (both clinical and administrative staff) to register for March of Dime's Awareness to Action: Dismantling Bias in Maternal and Infant Healthcare.

The first 100 participants who complete this free, 90-minute virtual training will receive a $100 Amex® gift card as compensation for their time and effort. To register, click here to create an account. To access the training:

General maternal health support for patients

Baby BluePrints®

Our Baby BluePrints® maternity program is free and supports people during pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. Providers are encouraged to refer eligible patients to the program.

Your patients/our members who have an Independence plan and who are pregnant can also self-enroll in the program by calling 1-800-598-BABY (1-800-598-2229) Once enrolled, they will receive educational messages and outreach. Topics include prenatal care, nutrition, screenings for high-risk indicators, and prenatal/postpartum depression.

Patients who are high-risk and eligible for condition management can receive support throughout their pregnancy from an obstetrical Health Coach.

Ovia Health

Ovia Health is a resource that offers three mobile apps to support your patients/our members during each stage of parenthood, whether they are trying to conceive, expecting, or caring for a new baby. Patients can download the apps here.
