Encourage your patients to get ready for the great outdoors with help from SilverSneakers®

May 17, 2017

[

Summer is a great time for your Independence Medicare Advantage patients to enjoy being outdoors with friends and family. Swimming, hiking, boating, softball ... the list is endless. Those who are more athletic may prefer organized sports, while others may like walking around the neighborhood with friends or even their dog. Whatever they?re interested in, encourage them to get out there and enjoy any type of activity that fits their fitness level and interests.

Remind your patients to stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, and wear sun-protective clothing when they?re out during the day. It?s best to avoid midday activities, if possible, to minimize sun exposure. It?s also a good idea to carry a cell phone, especially if they?ll be out alone.

When it?s simply too hot or humid to enjoy outdoor activities, Independence Medicare Advantage members can work out indoors at no extra cost by taking advantage of their SilverSneakers fitness benefit. The SilverSneakers program by Tivity Health, an independent company, includes access to 13,000+ fitness locations nationwide, where members can use cardio equipment, free weights, pools, walking tracks, and other amenities. The program also offers fitness classes including the following:

  • Signature SilverSneakers classes*: These are designed for everyone, from beginners to workout warriors. At locations with pools, they can swim laps or take water aerobics classes, including SilverSneakers Splash (where offered) ? especially popular during the summer months.
  • SilverSneakers BOOM® classes*: These 30-minute classes, designed for more athletic adults, give members a more intense workout.
  • SilverSneakers FLEX® classes*: Members can choose from tai chi, Latin-style dance, yoga, walking groups, and more at local parks, recreation centers, adult-living communities, and other locations. While some SilverSneakers FLEX classes may be offered outdoors, many are also held inside for climate-controlled comfort.

Ask your patients if they?ve started using their SilverSneakers benefit, which is available at no additional cost to Keystone 65 Select HMO, Keystone 65 Preferred HMO, Keystone 65 Focus Rx HMO, and Personal Choice 65SM PPO members. If they have, encourage them to attend their local fitness location two to three times a week to supplement their fun outdoor activities. If they haven?t signed up yet, remind them ? enrollment is easy! They simply visit silversneakers.com and select Get Your Card and Find Fitness Locations. Next step: Get active in the comfort of a fitness location with friendly staff, certified instructor, and fellow SilverSneakers members to welcome them and help them get started.

Encourage your Independence Medicare Advantage patients to be active this summer with SilverSneakers. Find out more by visiting the SilverSneakers website or calling 1-888-423-4632 (TTY:711).
