New! Fax notifications from FutureScripts® Secure when Medicare Advantage members are late to refill medications

August 1, 2018

As of July 1, 2018, FutureScripts Secure instituted a new process that notifies prescribing providers when a Medicare Advantage member is late to refill prescriptions for diabetes medications, ACE/ARBs, and statins. A fax will be sent with the intent to identify members who may have potential barriers to care and may benefit from additional medication adherence counseling. If more than one provider has prescribed a medication to the same member, FutureScripts will notify each individual provider via fax. The member will also receive a letter in the mail urging medication adherence and providing helpful tips to improve overall compliance.

Fax notifications

When you receive a fax about a member?s late refills, it will include the name of the drug involved and information about the adherence issue. The pharmacy?s contact information will also be included. Please make note of the case number assigned should you need to contact the FutureScripts Clinical Team with any questions.

Here?s a sample of the fax you will receive:

What to do if you receive a notification about a member

If you receive a fax notification about a member?s late refill status:

  • Check to see how the information affects the member?s therapeutic goals. Could late refills be affecting HbA1c, blood pressure, or lipid levels?
  • Please review the information and mark the member?s chart for adherence counseling during his or her next office visit.
  • Counsel the member on the importance of medication adherence. Ask open-ended questions to identify barriers to care, such as:
    • How do you currently take your medications?
    • How do you remember to take your medications?
    • How easy is it for you to fill your medications?
    • What do you do if you forget to take your medicine?
  • Offer solutions to common barriers to adherence, for example:
    • Consider prescribing 90-day supplies if members forget to fill their medications or have trouble making it the pharmacy every month.
    • Consider alternative therapies if the member is encountering side effects or has cost concerns.
    • Consider recommending a pillbox or other unique pharmacy packaging solution to organize all the member?s medications.

As a provider, you also have access to the member?s Clinical Alerts and provider adherence reports on the NaviNet? web portal. The fax notifications were designed to complement Independence?s Clinical Alerts.

Viewing Clinical Alerts and provider adherence reports

Clinical Alerts are available through the Eligibility and Benefits Inquiry transaction on NaviNet. Select the View Clinical Alerts link from the Eligibility and Benefits Details screen as shown below.

Note: When you select the View Clinical Alerts link, you must attest that you have received permission from the member to view his or her clinical information by selecting the I Agree button.

Provider adherence reports are available upon request. These comprehensive, member-level reports provide actionable recommendations to improve medication adherence. For example, the provider adherence reports highlight which members may most benefit from switching to a 90-day prescription supply. The reports may be helpful when counseling your patient on the importance of medication adherence to treat the condition.
