Urgent care centers and retail health clinics are alternatives to the ER when physicians are unavailable

May 30, 2014

We would like to remind you of the urgent care benefitavailable for most IBC members. This benefit allowsmembers to receive services for urgent medical issuesthat do not require the advanced medical services of theemergency room/department (ER) when their physicianis unavailable. Generally, urgent care is categorized asmedically necessary treatment for a sudden illness oraccidental injury that requires prompt medical attention, but is not life-threatening and is not an emergencymedical condition, when a member?s primary physicianis unavailable.

Eligible members can receive urgent care in thefollowing places:

  • Urgent care centers. Urgent care centers arestaffed by board-certified physicians who can providemedically necessary treatment for a sudden illness orinjury that is not life-threatening.
  • Retail health clinics. Retail health clinics are staffedby certified registered nurse practitioners trained todiagnose, treat, and write prescriptions (when clinicallyappropriate) for common illnesses and medicalconditions. Local supervising physicians are on callduring clinic hours of operation to provide guidanceand direction when necessary.

Approved urgent care centers and retail health clinicscan be found by using the Find a Doctor tool on ourwebsite. Select Search underFind a Doctor. Then select Urgent Care Center & RetailClinic from the first drop-down menu and enter youradditional search criteria. These approved providers maytreat members without a referral or authorization.

You may want to print out a list of the approved urgentcare centers and retail health clinics in your area to keepon hand and share with the staff who handle after-hourscalls. This list may be instrumental in cases when amember requires urgent medical attention, but youroffice is closed and ER care is not necessary.

Note: Not all members are eligible for the urgent carebenefit. As always, continue to check the NaviNet® webportal for member eligibility and cost-sharing amounts.
