Encouraging care for your Keystone HMO CHIP patients: Chlamydia screening and contraceptive care for women

April 26, 2021

Independence is continuing its series of messages for the parents and/or guardians of our Keystone HMO Children's Health Insurance Program (Keystone HMO CHIP) members to help families manage their child's health care. The topics chosen are based on Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) measures. We are sharing these topics with you to help support compliance with these measures and to encourage families to obtain these important services.

This month's message is regarding chlamydia screening and contraceptive care for women.

Important information on HEDIS measures

Adolescents are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections. It is important that Keystone HMO CHIP adolescent and teen members receive clinical guidance and care regarding reproductive health.

Chlamydia screening

Measure: The percentage of women ages 16 – 24 who were identified as sexually active and who had at least one test for chlamydia during the measurement year.

Contraceptive care

Measure: The percentage of women ages 15 – 20 at risk of unintended pregnancy who were provided a most effective/moderately effective contraception method or a long-acting reversible method of contraception.

How you can help

  • include guidance on contraceptive care, reproductive health, and screenings for various sexually transmitted infections for teens as part of a well visit
  • educate teens about the signs, symptoms, and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases
  • ensure all assessments, screenings, follow-ups, as well as any results or findings are included in the medical record

For additional information, refer to the American Academy of Pediatrics and Bright Futures Recommendations for Preventive Pediatric Health Care for screening, assessments, and counseling for adolescents.
