Lead testing available in provider's office and Labcorp locations

July 15, 2022

As a result of the enhanced lead testing program, children aged 2 years and younger can now receive a lead test at participating provider locations. Providers can collect the sample for the test in the office, during a routine well-child visit, using the filter-paper testing technique that requires only two drops of blood taken from a fingertip.

Independence has contracted with Labcorp to provide training and resources so providers can conduct the test in the office.

Testing the patient during a routine well-child visit will increase the number of children who are evaluated and treated for lead poisoning by removing one of the major barriers to testing.

Providers taking part in the program can start testing patients in the office right away.*

Lead testing at a Labcorp patient service center, including Labcorp at Walgreens

Patients who use telemedicine for routine well-child visits can have a lead test sample taken at a participating Labcorp patient service center (PSC), including Labcorp at Walgreens locations.*

Wherever the sample is collected, the test will be performed at a Labcorp laboratory, and the results will be delivered to you in a few days. There is no additional co-pay for your patients. Simply write a prescription for the test, and the patient caregiver can schedule an appointment online at https://www.labcorp.com/labs-and-appointments, then go to a local Labcorp PSC location, including Labcorp at Walgreens, for the test. Appointments are not required but may reduce waiting time.

*Use CPT® code 83655 to report the completion of lead testing in the office or at a Labcorp PSC.

Important W-30 well-child visits to remember:

Providers are asked to perform well-child visits in accordance with the following:

  • six or more well visits by age 15 months.
  • one or two well visits by age 30 months.
