It’s important to refer members to in-network labs for services

December 12, 2022

Independence Blue Cross (Independence) network providers should refer members only to participating providers for covered services. This includes, but is not limited to, ancillary services such as laboratory and radiology.

Use of a nonparticipating laboratory requires prior notification and agreement of the member per the requirements of your participation agreement. Additionally, preapproval is required for an HMO member.

Members and/or their lab specimens should be directed to a participating outpatient laboratory provider, except:

  • in an emergency.
  • as otherwise described in the applicable Benefit Program requirements.
  • as otherwise required by law.

For detailed information on this process, please visit our in-network laboratory services resource page.
